How I Adjust My Skincare With the Seasons

By Asavari Bhardwaj

One of the things I love most about Ayurveda is that it recognizes we're not separate from nature. We're part of it. And just like the seasons change, so do our needs.

I used to use the same skincare routine year-round. Same products, same frequency, same everything. And I wondered why my skin would suddenly get dry in winter or break out in summer.

Now I adjust. And my skin has never been happier.

Winter: Vata Season

Winter is cold, dry, windy. In Ayurveda, this is Vata season. And Vata skin needs oil. Lots of it.

I increase my oil usage in winter. I do full-body abhyanga at least three times a week. I use our Shat Dhuat Ghrit on my face every single night, sometimes even in the morning under my makeup.

I also use our Balm more. On my cuticles, my elbows, my heels. Anywhere that feels dry or cracked.

Spring: Kapha Season

Spring is heavy, damp, cool. Kapha season. This is when my skin can feel congested, sluggish. I might break out more.

I use our Ubtan more frequently in spring. Once or twice a week instead of once a month. The gentle exfoliation helps clear out the heaviness.

I also lighten up on the oils slightly. I still use them, but maybe not as heavily. I let my skin breathe a bit more.

Summer: Pitta Season

Summer is hot, sharp, intense. Pitta season. This is when my skin can get inflamed, red, irritated.

I switch to our Shat Dhuat Ghrit almost exclusively. It's cooling, soothing. I keep it in the fridge sometimes for an extra cooling effect.

I also use our Snaan Bar more frequently. The gentle cleansing helps remove sweat and heat without stripping my skin.

Monsoon: Back to Vata

The rainy season can be tricky. It's humid but also cool. I find my skin can get confused.

I listen more carefully during this time. Some days I need more oil, some days less. I let my skin tell me what it needs instead of following a rigid routine.

The Lesson

The point isn't to have a complicated routine. The point is to pay attention. To notice. To respond.

Your skin will tell you what it needs if you listen. Tight and dry? More oil. Congested and heavy? More cleansing and exfoliation. Red and irritated? Cooling and soothing.

It's not complicated. It's just conscious.

For You

Start noticing how your skin changes with the seasons. You don't need to overhaul everything. Just small adjustments. A little more of this, a little less of that.

Work with nature, not against it. Your skin will thank you.
