The Hand Care Ritual That Became My Meditation

By Asavari Bhardwaj

Our hands do everything. They type, they cook, they clean, they create, they comfort. And we barely think about them until they hurt or crack or bleed.

I started paying attention to my hands about a year ago. Not because they were in bad shape, but because I realized how much I use them. How much I ask of them. How little I give back.

The Practice

Several times a day, I take a moment for my hands. I keep our Balm everywhere. On my desk, in my bag, by my bed, in the kitchen.

I take a small amount and I warm it between my palms. Then I massage each hand. Really massage. Each finger, the webbing between them, the backs of my hands, my wrists.

The Technique

I use my thumb to press into the palm of my opposite hand. There are so many nerve endings there, so many marma points. Pressing into them releases tension I didn't even know I was holding.

I massage each finger from base to tip. I rotate my wrists. I stretch my fingers wide and then make a fist.

It takes maybe two minutes. But those two minutes ground me. They bring me back into my body. They remind me to slow down.

Why Hands Matter

In Ayurveda, the hands are connected to the heart. When we care for our hands, we're caring for our emotional center. When we massage our hands, we're soothing our nervous system.

I notice that when I do this regularly, I'm calmer. I'm more patient. I'm less reactive.

The Unexpected Benefit

My hands look better. The skin is softer, the cuticles are healthier. But that's not why I do it.

I do it because it's a moment of kindness. A moment of presence. A moment of gratitude for these hands that do so much.

Make It Yours

You don't need a special balm, though ours is really good. You just need a moment and some intention.

Next time you're stressed, try it. Next time you're overwhelmed, try it. Next time you're waiting for something, try it.

Your hands carry you through your life. Give them a moment of care. See how it feels.
