My Evening Wind-Down: From Chaos to Calm
By Asavari Bhardwaj
I used to go to bed wired. Scrolling, thinking, planning, worrying. My body was in bed, but my mind was still running at full speed. Sleep was something that happened to me, eventually, out of sheer exhaustion.
Not anymore.
Now I have a ritual. It's simple, but it works. And it starts about an hour before I actually want to sleep.
The Transition
First, I dim the lights. All of them. I light a candle or two. The shift in lighting tells my brain that the day is ending. It's a signal.
Then I put my phone in another room. Not on silent. Not face down. In another room. This was hard at first. Now it's non-negotiable.
The Cleanse
I wash my face with our Snaan Bar. Cool water, gentle circles. I take my time. This isn't about getting clean. It's about washing the day off. Literally and metaphorically.
I pat my face dry and apply a small amount of Shat Dhuat Ghrit. It's a cooling cream, and it feels like relief. I massage it into my face, my neck, behind my ears.
The Feet
Here's something I learned from Ayurveda that changed my sleep: oil your feet before bed. I use our Balm for this. Just a little bit, massaged into the soles of my feet.
In Ayurveda, the feet are connected to the entire body through marma points, energy centers. Oiling them calms the nervous system. I was skeptical until I tried it. Now I can't sleep without it.
The Stillness
I sit on my bed. Not in it yet, on it. I close my eyes and I breathe. Just five minutes. Sometimes I count my breaths. Sometimes I just notice them.
This is when my mind tries to remind me of everything I didn't do, everything I need to do tomorrow. I let the thoughts come, and I let them go. Like clouds.
The Sleep
When I finally lie down, my body knows it's time. I fall asleep faster. I sleep deeper. I wake up less. And when I do wake up, I feel rested. Actually rested.
For You
You don't need to do all of this. Pick one thing. Maybe it's the face wash. Maybe it's the feet. Maybe it's just putting your phone away.
Start there. See what happens. Sleep is sacred. It's when our bodies heal, when our minds process, when we integrate everything we've experienced.
Give yourself the gift of a good night's sleep. You deserve it.
